Gracie Combatives: the self-defense foundation of Jiu-Jitsu
Gracie University's course that teaches you to protect yourself in the situations that really happen, step by step and with no experience needed.
What is Gracie Combatives?
Gracie Combatives is the beginner curriculum built by the Gracie family, the founders of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, at Gracie University. It gathers the 36 most important Jiu-Jitsu techniques for self-defense: escaping from underneath, controlling an attacker, defending punches and chokes, and taking someone down.
The whole course is built on 36 lessons, each one a situation that really happens in a fight: someone on top of you, a headlock, a punch coming at you.
The goal is to protect yourself and control the situation without hurting anyone, not to win a match. That makes it the best place for anyone to start.
Each technique is repeated until it becomes a reflex. Gracie University estimates 8 to 12 months to reach Gracie Combatives belt level.
Students who finish the course and show command of the techniques receive the academy's certificate of achievement in Jiu-Jitsu Combative Skills.
